    Guilt, Awe or Inspiration?

FROM Open Doors Youth ON 2009 03 03 COMMENTS SO FAR (5)

“There are two main reactions to meeting persecuted Christians for the first time: guilt and awe. Neither is helpful.”
Ron Boyd-Macmillan, Writer-at-Large for Open Doors

How did you feel when you heard about persecution for the first time? Scared? Guilty? Rubbish about yourself and your faith? Encouraged? Puzzled? Inspired?

Persecuted Christians are not super-Christians. There’s no such thing. They’re ordinary human beings just like us, who struggle and suffer and get cross and tired. The cool thing is that God looks after all of us, and equips us for whatever we face. He’s chosen some of us to be persecuted and have a gift of sharing his sufferings; and some of us to be free and have the gift of showing God’s love to our persecuted brothers and sisters. We need each other!

Will you use whatever you have to pray sometime over the weekend of 6-8 March? Whether you feel guilty or in awe or just inspired, your prayers will make a difference to persecuted Christians. Persecution can destroy the church without prayer; but with prayer, God is released to work and amazing things happen.

Don’t forget to upload your photo of your Shockwave event or experience on our gallery live this weekend: 6-8 March 2009. Be part of the global connection, be part of Shockwave!

This is right. I first met persecuted Christians 18 months ago - I was in awe and thought I have so much to learn from them, but they thought the same about me. It was humbling and helped me to pray for them in a new way now I have met them. I hope to go back again soon.

My sister Katie had a burden for the persecuted church. She passed away at the age of 19 in a car accident. She left us with a song entitled “Remembering the Persecuted.” As you remember the persecuted church this weekend, please take the time to visit my sister’s website at katiescomfort.org. You will be blessed as you listen to the words of this song.

Yeah thats right, I always feel guilty for having a house and a nice family. I also feel guilty that I can’t go out and help those people. I know I can pray but I’m the sort of person that likes danger and adventure and it feels like being trapped.
